Many refillable 1 lb-style propane cylinders are marketed with an initial 12-year DOT qualification period. In practice, refillers look at the manufacture/test date stamped on the cylinder (not your purchase date). After that period, the cylinder typically needs to be professionally inspected and requalified/recertified, or taken out of service and disposed of properly per local rules.
