How Much Propane Is Left In My Tank?Updated 18 days ago
The best way to check is to weigh your tank and do some quick math. Gauges made for big BBQ tanks aren't accurate on smaller tanks like the Gas Growler.
Steps:
Weigh your tank (a fish or luggage scale works great).
Subtract your tank's tare weight (TW), the weight of the tank when empty. You'll find this stamped on the tank handle, or in the table below if it's hard to read.
Divide that number by 4.2, the weight of one gallon of propane.
(tank weight − TW) ÷ 4.2 = gallons of propane left
Can't read the number on your tank? Use this table instead:
| Tank Size | Naked Weight (tank only) | Deluxe weight (Tank + Hose + Hang tag) |
| 3.8 lb | 7.9 lbs | 9.9 lbs |
| 5.0 lb | 9.3 lbs | 11.4 lbs |
| 10 lb | 13.8 lbs | 16.2 lbs |
A full 5 lb tank holds about 1.2 gallons of propane.
When you refill, ask your propane attendant to put in 1.1 to 1.3 gallons rather than filling until their shutoff kicks in. Small tanks like the Gas Growler can easily be overfilled, and attendants are used to filling much bigger tanks.
