My Gas Growler Loses Pressure. Is That Normal?Updated a month ago

Yes, this can be normal, and it's usually easy to fix. The most common cause is a flame that keeps dying out on your camp stove. There are two likely reasons for this.

1. Let gas build up in the hose first

Before starting your stove, make sure all the burners are off. Open the tank valve very slowly and wait at least 30 seconds before lighting the stove. This helps build steady pressure. Opening the valve slowly also keeps some stoves' regulators from shutting off the gas due to a pressure spike.

2. Your tank may be overfilled

If the first fix doesn't help, your tank may have too much propane in it. Our tanks should hold about 1.2 gallons, which leaves room for the liquid propane to turn into gas. Some fillers aren't used to small tanks and can overfill them by mistake.

If your tank is overfilled, try burning off some propane. Hook the tank up to your stove, open the valve slowly, and run the stove in short bursts. Repeat this until the propane level drops and performance improves.

Avoiding This in the Future

When you refill your tank, ask the attendant to add 1.1–1.3 gallons instead of filling until the shutoff kicks in. With a small tank, even a couple tenths of a gallon makes a difference.
