My hand/toe warmers are not working - what can I do?Updated 2 months ago

If your air-activated warmers are not warming at all or don't feel warm enough, here are some tips to help ensure your warmers work when you need them most!

  1. Store your warmers in an extra air-tight bag- The first part of a warmer to fail is typically the packaging, causing air to get in and prematurely activate your warmer. Store them in an extra bag to help prevent this from happening!
  2. Check your warmer’s texture BEFORE packing it for your next adventure- Even if your warmers are brand new, there is always a possibility of packaging failure or accidently cutting into the pack when opening a box. If your warmers feel hard and brittle in their packaging, this is a sign that air made its way inside and the heat potential is already spent.  A good, unused pack of warmers should be soft and malleable.
  3. Prevent your warmers from freezing- All warmers have a little water in them, which means they are susceptible to Freezing! If they are frozen, they will not warm up. Keep your warmers in a pocket close to your body warmth to prevent them from freezing or place them somewhere warm to thaw before use if they have been in cold conditions.
  4. Shake and expose to air before tucking away- Once you are ready to open a pack of warmers, gently shake them and let them sit out for up to 15 minutes or once they start to produce heat. This allows them to be fully exposed to air to initiate the heating process.
  5. Play with the amount of air your warmers receive! - Before giving up and feeling disappointed in your lukewarm warmers, engage as an active member of the science experiment. Your warmers may need more air if they stop producing heat in an air tight water proof pocket. In contrast, they might need LESS air exposure if they are sitting fully out in the open or in a light layer where the heat they are producing quickly dissipates and they hardly feel warm at all. Try changing their locating to somewhere well insulated to let the heat build upon itself until they are nice and hot!
