What if a propane refill station won’t fill my Ignik TapRack?Updated 24 days ago
First: don’t panic — this can happen, especially early on. The TapRack is a newer kind of refill system, and some locations may decline simply because they haven’t seen it before, don’t have a trained attendant on duty, or only offer tank exchanges (not refills).
The good news: there are a few simple steps that usually solve it.
Best first move: try U-Haul
Our top recommendation is U-Haul. They’re one of the most widely available propane refill options in the U.S., and they’re our most well-known nationwide refilling partner.
Tip: Not every U-Haul location refills propane every day, so call ahead before you drive over.
Why a station might say “no” (common reasons)
A “no” doesn’t always mean your TapRack is a problem. Often it’s one of these:
They only do propane exchanges, not refills
The certified/authorized propane attendant isn’t on shift
They’re unfamiliar with the TapRack and don’t want to guess
They have a site policy about filling customer-owned equipment
They’re busy and don’t want to take on something new at that moment
Before you go: set yourself up for success
Come prepared with the TapRack and EMPTY bottles already attached.
Familiarize yourself with the fill process the refiller will follow.
Show the refiller the permanent hangtag on the TapRack that lists filling instructions (a Quick Start), compliances/certifications, and fill limits.
Scan QR code, for the refiller-specific instruction page.
What to say at the counter (simple script)
Keep it short and confident:
“This is an Ignik TapRack refill system with refillable 15.5 oz bottles. It’s designed to be filled through the TapRack’s main valve and confirmed by weight to the labeled limits.”
If they’re hesitant, add:
“If you’d like, I can show you the Ignik refiller instructions and labeled fill limits.”
A quick note on safety (and why we’re strict about this)
The TapRack system is designed to be filled by a professional propane refiller, to labeled limits. If a location isn’t comfortable filling it, we recommend moving on rather than trying to “talk them into it” or attempting DIY methods.
