How do I check for leaks on the TapRack and bottles (simple soap test)?Updated 20 days ago

Doing a quick leak check (“bubble test”) is a smart best practice:

  • Before first use

  • After refilling

  • Any time you swap/reattach bottles

  • If you ever smell propane (rotten egg / skunk-like odor)

A simple soapy-water test can show leaks by creating growing bubbles at the leaking connection.

Safety first (read this)

  • Do this outdoors in a well-ventilated area.

  • Keep away from flames, sparks, cigarettes, heaters, or anything that can ignite propane.

  • Never use a flame to check for leaks.

  • If you smell a strong propane odor and can’t safely stop it, leave the area and call emergency services.

What you’ll need

  • A spray bottle (or small cup + brush)

  • Water + dish soap (a “thick soapy water” mix works well) or a commercial leak-detector solution

  • Optional best practice: avoid cleaners/solutions that contain ammonia, which can stress brass fittings over time.

Where to spray (TapRack-specific)

Spray/wipe the soapy solution on:

  • Each bottle-to-TapRack connection point (all 1–4 mounts)

  • The TapRack main valve area

  • Bottle bleeder valve areas

  • Any hose/regulator connections you’re using (for example, your QCC-1 appliance connection)

Step-by-step: the bubble test

  1. Turn the appliance OFF and make sure you’re outside, away from ignition sources.

  2. Close the TapRack main valve.

  3. Spray/apply soapy water to the connection points listed above.

  4. Watch closely for bubbles that form and grow. Growing bubbles = a leak.

No bubbles? You’re good to go.

If you see bubbles (what to do)

  1. Check the TapRack main valve.

  2. Hand-tighten / reseat the connection with each bottle:

    • If it’s a bottle connection: remove and reattach the bottle (quarter-turn) and ensure it’s fully locked.

    • If it’s a hose/regulator: hand-tighten (don’t over-tighten).

  3. Repeat the test on the individual bottle and/or repeat on the entire system

If bubbles continue after reseating/tightening: stop using the system and contact Ignik Support for help.

Pro tips

  • Use a bright light (or your phone flashlight) to spot tiny bubbles.

  • If you’ve just sprayed soapy water everywhere, wipe/rinse it off after the test so it doesn’t attract dirt.
